Nuclear Medicine Special Interest Group
Nuclear Medicine is the use of radioactive substances to diagnose and treat disease. Areas of Nuclear Medicine include in vivo tests, gamma camera imaging, single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), positron emission tomography (PET) and molecular radiotherapy.
The Nuclear Medicine Special Interest Group (NMSIG) is a dedicated body of IPEM volunteers who work in Nuclear Medicine as Clinical Scientists and Clinical Technologists, who organise and facilitate activities and resources in the field of Nuclear Medicine. The group meets several times a year.
The purpose of the NMSIG is to support IPEM’s strategy for (1) providing learning and development services; (2) building a vibrant and inclusive community and (3) leading on professional knowledge and innovation. The NMSIG aims to achieve this in the following ways:
- Use the group’s nuclear medicine expertise to represent nuclear medicine interests for IPEM in a range of professional situations.
- Organise a programme of scientific and educational meetings and webinars focusing on nuclear medicine.
- Contribute to the publication of documents and other resources for the Nuclear Medicine community and providing expert response to consultations.
- Support IPEM’s work to review and consult on levels of workforce provision within nuclear medicine.
- Encourage discussion and collaborative working between SIG members working in different disciplines, whether that is within healthcare (e.g. nuclear medicine services at a large teaching hospital compared to a rural general hospital) or different areas such as academia and industry.
If you are interested in joining the Committee, you can do so by following the “Volunteer for IPEM” link below and reviewing the role description provided. (Applications open in April every year and close in June)
NMSIG shares updates about its work as well as topics for discussion through IPEM’s online Community of Interest, which is open to anyone with an interest in the area – see here for more information/

Nuclear Medicine Software Quality Group
Due to the complexity and specificity of software and analysis systems used within Nuclear Medicine, a specialised sub-group within NMSIG, known as Nuclear Medicine Software Quality Group (NMSQG), focuses specifically on issues related to nuclear medicine software. The NMSQG has several key objectives:
- Designing and distributing test images to nuclear medicine centres across the UK for computer analysis,
- Collating and analysing the returned results to understand variabilities in practice across the UK, and publishing these findings,
- Promoting local initiatives aimed at validating algorithms and other software utilities,
- Identifying and highlighting potential areas for improvement within the nuclear medicine community and to the suppliers of the nuclear medicine software.
For any communication or queries related to the group’s activities, the NMSQG can be contacted through the IPEM Office
