Who is suitable for the Clinical Scientist Guided Training Scheme?

The Clinical Scientist Guided Training Scheme is suitable for those who are training towards the Association of Clinical Scientists' "Route 2" or the Association of Healthcare Scientists' "STP equivalence". It will be the responsibility of the trainee to apply to one of these bodies upon completing their training in order to reach registration as a Clinical Scientist.

We welcome applications from those who have:

  • Suitable employment enabling you to cover all competencies
  • Level 7 (MSc equivalent) educational qualification
  • A HCPC registered Clinical Scientist who has agreed to be your Training Supervisor.

Application and training plans

Applicants will be required to submit:

  • An application form
  • A Training Supervisor supporting application form (only required if the Training Supervisor has not previously been approved as a supervisor by IPEM)
  • Training Plan (this will need to demonstrate how you intend to fulfil the requirements for your chosen route to registration. You will find a template for your training plan in the Training plan guidance section below)
  • CV
  • Job description
  • Signed Terms & Conditions document (available in the training plan guidance section below - please complete and sign before uploading to the online application form. You must use your physical signature; however this can be a scanned copy of your physical signature) 

If you are currently on IPEM's Part II Training Scheme and wish to transfer to the Clinical Scientist Guided Training Scheme, please email training@ipem.ac.uk prior to submitting an application. 

Fees and extensions

For enrolment in 2024, the training scheme will be £3,630 (VAT not payable). This will cover a maximum training period of 3 years and 6 months but can be charged annually.

For any trainees requiring an extension to their training, there will be extension and deferral policies in place. Further information will be released prior to enrolment.

Enrolment

There are two intakes per year - May and November. The deadline for receipt of applications will be 30th April and 31st October respectively.

There are two Induction Days for new trainees per year. These are in person events, and are held in January following the November intake and June following the May intake. These are typically whole day events held at the IPEM National Office in York (unless otherwise specified) and all new trainees are expected to attend.
