Metrology for MRI Course
Course description
The aim of this course is to develop a good fundamental understanding of the principles of metrology as they apply to quantitative MRI (qMRI), and to understand the current state-of-the-art in metrology for qMRI.
- Module 1 provides an introduction to quantitative MRI and MR imaging in general
- Module 2 introduces key concepts in metrology, the science of measurement and its application
- Module 3 explores the role of metrology in quantitative MRI
Upon successful completion of the course, learners will receive an NPL Certificate of Completion.
The course is largely self-contained, but some background knowledge in MRI is an advantage. A basic knowledge of MRI is useful, but not essential. Basic knowledge of atomic nuclei and nuclear spins (no mathematical background required) is necessary. Some experience with MR images and how they are used is also useful.
Learning outcomes
After this course, learners will:
- Understand the process of MR image formation including an appreciation of different contrast mechanisms
- Understand the difference between qualitative and quantitative imaging, including the difference between intensive and extensive quantities
- Understand the principles of metrology: uncertainty, confidence, and traceability as they relate to MRI
- Understand the role of phantoms in quantitative MRI, and commonly used phantoms and their roles in MRI
