Enter the Early Career Essay Prize 2021

IF you are in the early stages of your career then enter the IPEM Essay Prize – but hurry, the closing date is soon.

This is the second year of the IPEM/Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers (WCSIM) joint Essay Prize, which is open to members of either organisation who are in the early stages of their career, typically within 10-15 years of graduation or of commencing their relevant employment.

The essay should be a maximum of 1,000 words and should be understood by members of the general public. The title of the 2021 essay is 'Re-think of medical imaging: How could new methods, technologies and work practices impact the post Covid backlog and patient outcomes?’

The closing date for applications is Saturday 31 July and applications should be emailed to Marie Goodall (marie@ipem.ac.uk). IPEM and WCSIM will each nominate a judge.

A prize of £500 and an IPEM Gold Medal will be presented to the winner at one of the WCSIM’s social events, usually the October banquet, by IPEM’s President and the Master of WCSIM.

The winning essay will be published in SCOPE and announced in the WCSIM’s regular news bulletin and placed on both institutions’ websites.

Professor Stephen O’Connor, IPEM’s President, said: ‘We had some fantastic entries for last year’s inaugural essay prize, which was won by James Bezer, a PhD engineering student at Imperial College in London.

‘I would encourage as many of our early career healthcare scientists to enter the competition and we look forward to receiving your entries.’
