IF you are in the early stages of your career then enter the IPEM Essay Prize 2023.
This is a joint prize by IPEM and the Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers (WCSIM), which is open to members of either organisation who are in the early stages of their career, typically within 10-15 years of graduation or of commencing their relevant employment.
The essay should be a maximum of 1,000 words and should be understood by members of the general public.
The title of the 2023 essay is: ‘How will the role of physics in the fight against cancer develop over the next 10 years?’ and the closing date for entries is 15 August.
The winning essay will be published in SCOPE magazine and there is also a prize of £500 and an IPEM Gold Medal for the winner.
Charitable objectives
Dr Robert Farley, IPEM’s President, said: ‘We had some fantastic entries for last year’s Essay Prize, which was won by Dr Gamalendira Shivapatham, who is currently taking part in the NHS England Scientist Training Programme at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he is specialising in Medical Device Risk Management and Governance. He is also reading for a part-time MSc in Clinical Science at Kings College London.
‘I would encourage as many of our early career healthcare scientists to enter the competition and we look forward to receiving your entries.’
WCSIM is one of the modern livery companies of the City of London and a charity which promotes the craft of scientific instrument making and the exchange of ideas and information by members and guests through meetings, visits, lectures and social events. WCSIM provides opportunities for members to encourage and support younger members and engage with schools at careers’ fairs and support STEM days. The Livery encourages young people to participate in scientific instrumentation through grants, prizes, scholarships and apprenticeships. The Livery has relationships with a number of universities as well as the armed forces and the Arkwright Scholarship Scheme.
A link between IPEM and WCSIM meets the charitable objectives of both organisations.
