Global Clinical Engineering Day team win top awards

SHOWCASING the work of clinical engineers during the Covid-19 pandemic has won two top awards for the team behind the UK’s Global Clinical Engineering Day contribution.

Led by Basit Abdul, IPEM’s Vice President International, the team were the Advancing Healthcare Awards Overall Winner for Healthcare Science 2021, which you can watch here.

The team also won the Academy for Healthcare Science Award for Inspiring the Healthcare Science Workforce of the Future, which you can see here.

Global CE Day is a worldwide celebration which recognises the contributions of clinical engineers to healthcare and is celebrated on 21 October.

Mr Abdul, who is Trust Lead Healthcare Scientist and Programme Manager (CE Apprenticeships) at Barts Health NHS Trust, and HCS Fellow at NHS England and NHS Improvement, led a team drawn from NHS trusts across the UK, who took part in a specially-commissioned film to highlight the vital work clinical engineers played during the pandemic.

Hosted by science writer and broadcaster Vivienne Parry OBE, who is an Honorary Fellow of IPEM, the film featured more than 25 clinical engineers and some top leaders from the NHS who explained their role in response to the pandemic.

Mr Adbul said: ‘I’m extremely proud and delighted that we have won these awards, it is recognition of what was a fantastic team effort by everyone concerned to make the UK’s contribution to Global CE Day 2020 so successful.’

Professor Stephen O’Connor, IPEM’s President, added: ‘I’m delighted for Basit and the team, these are well-deserved awards and congratulations go to everyone who was involved in supporting and producing the film.’
