Overview

The second IPEM Science Technology and Engineering Forum 2024 (STEF ‘24) will be held at Central Hall, Westminster London on Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th October 2024.

The theme for the two-day conference will be “Beyond Boundaries: collaborating for tomorrow's innovative solutions” and will focus on emerging topics that are relevant to all our members to enable a comprehensive oversight of the issues and opportunities facing all specialisms. This will provide a cross-disciplinary view to enable the Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering community to work together to identify solutions, so that we can tackle these challenges together.

Topics and focus

STEF 2024 will have a large focus on cross-disciplinary topics, aiming to illustrate that we have far more commonalities across specialisms than differences.  This event will promote learning and sharing knowledge from colleagues in other areas of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering, to illustrate how we can collaborate to develop tomorrow’s innovative solutions. Abstract submissions are now closed and being reviewed, the full programme including presentations and posters will be published soon.

As part of STEF’s cross-disciplinary initiative, we have accepted abstracts from all Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering specialisms that cover the following topics:

1. Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning

AI and Machine Learning implementation is occurring in all areas of Physics and Medicine in Healthcare, and this topic aims to illustrate how you can learn from colleagues in other specialisms about the approaches they have taken to implement these digital solutions in their healthcare ecosystem and understand the challenges and solutions they have encountered.

2. Sustainability in Healthcare Settings

As the NHS has committed to becoming net zero by 2040, there has never been a larger focus on sustainability and green initiatives in healthcare. This topic aims showcase the myriad of efforts that have aided the development of sustainability within healthcare from speakers in clinical, academic and industry backgrounds.

3. Workforce & Training

The workforce crisis is a huge issue facing Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering, and this topic aims to highlight the challenges, opportunities and forward-thinking approaches to tackle these issues. This topic may cover areas such as discussions around effective training of the workforce, the use of digital transformation to aid workforce pressures and innovating for service improvement.

4. Ethical Healthcare

With the rise of AI, many discussions have taken place around potential bias in utilising these tools in healthcare. This has shone a spotlight on ethical issues within all aspects of healthcare, including equity of access, gender and ethnic minority imbalances in healthcare research and challenges facing disabled or neurodivergent patients. This topic aims to highlight these challenges within all areas of Physics and Engineering in Medicine, with a view to enabling a discussion on how we can tackle these challenges together.
