IPEM launches new Innovation Grants

03/05/2024

NEW and reinvigorated Innovation Grants have been launched by IPEM.

In previous years, IPEM has allocated funding for individual research projects of up to £10,000. These were, however, mainly aimed at academic researchers, and it was felt it was time update them to appeal to the broader membership of those working in academia, industry and clinical settings. This could cover the day release of clinical staff, and mean the funding is more impactful for larger scale research projects.

The new grants have been developed by IPEM’s Science, Technology, Engineering, Research and Innovation Council (STERIC) and now consist of:

Seedcorn Fund

This fund is designed to provide IPEM members with an opportunity to work with interdisciplinary teams to take early-phase development of new and innovative research projects leading to the submission of large, externally funded research. These projects should bring together distinct research expertise to address priority research problems in line with the IPEM’s Science Leadership Strategy and where there is a clear pathway to sustainable external funding.

How much funding is available? Projects can be funded up to £25,000 with a maximum duration of one year.

Who can apply? Any IPEM Full member or Fellow can apply as the lead applicant, however the team should be multi-disciplinary and therefore can contain non-IPEM members.

First into Research Fellowship

This fund is designed to allow an IPEM member with dedicated time to perform an innovation or research project with a higher education institute or commercial partner.  The aim is to provide funding to the applicant’s employing institute to provide release of the applicant to perform innovation or research, in addition to funding research costs and supervision/training costs at the higher education institute or with the commercial partner.

How much funding is available? Projects can be funded up to £15,000 with a maximum duration of one year.

Who can apply? Any IPEM Full member or Fellow can apply.

Translational Knowledge Exchange and Training Grant

This fund is designed to empower an IPEM member to link with a translational academic, industry or clinical partner.  The aim is to provide experience in an alternative sector, enabling the translation of skills and knowledge from one area of practice to another.

How much funding is available? Projects can be funded up to £5,000 with a maximum duration of one year.

Who can apply? Any IPEM Full member or Fellow can apply.

Applications for the Innovation Grants will open soon and a dedicated webinar is being run by STERIC on Monday 20 May to discuss the new grants in more detail. The webinar is free to attend but booking in advance is essential.

Dr Anna Barnes, IPEM’s President, said: ‘I’m delighted we have refreshed and updated the Innovation Grants so they appeal to a broader spectrum of IPEM’s membership.

‘These grants help IPEM achieve its charitable objective to promote for the public benefit the advancement of physics and engineering applied to medicine and biology and to advance public education in the field, so I would encourage you to apply when they open.’
